Essays

156E - Application of the Bowlsby patent
The Continental Bank Note Co. experimented with the Bowlsby patent. To a block of the 1c issue they applied by hand gum to only the top half of the stamp. Horizontal perforations were then applied to the stamp just below where the gum ends. These perforations were either applied by hand or by using a sewing machine. We have handled only one other block. A very rare piece. $1,500.00

Azariah B. Harris 1879 Coupon Essay

A proposed $300 30-year Postal revenue Bond with 3.65% interest. Daily coupons valued at three cents each, "receivable for postage in all parts of the U.S. after date thereon".

This is the hardest card proof set to complete since the 1c, 3, 6c, and 10c values only come form the first printing. Theoretically one could only assemble 500 complete sets. However, I doubt that even half that number exists today. The one-cent value is by far the toughest value to find. This set even comes with a distribution envelope. $1,500.00

Two of the five, 12c, listed colors, both on india paper and full size for these. Named for Albert Goodall who was president of the ABNCo. At the time they were produced in the 1870’s. Five sets are said to have been produced. However, we know of only one or two other surviving sets. Scott is woefully behind in pricing these. Dull brown and Dull grey blue $600.00 each
