65 – Turned P.O.W.
First used by the prisoner’s sister and sent from Nashville, TN (with no. 65 and CDS). Turned and used by the prisoner back to his sister in Nashville. Joseph Porter Hamilton was captured at Hatcher’s Run on Feb. 6, 1865 and at the time was a member of Co. H, 7th Tenn. (Archers Brigade). The cover is accompanied by a one page letter datelined: Point Lookout, March 21, 1865. A very interesting letter of which a scan is available. He thanks his sister for sending U.S. stamps. A very rare use of a highly unusual
"3" rate marking-Libertyville, Illinois


Stampless envelope with red CDS and marvelous red "three" rate marking. I have recorded seven covers from this correspondence (Miss Albina Drew) with the same markings.
