Star Routes 1824 – 1875
By Hugh V. Feldman, 2008, This hard bound work of 403 pages,
245 in color, covers the growth in the use of steamboats for mail
contracts through there peak in contracted routes prior to the Civil
War and the decline of them thereafter. A total of 422 separate
route contracts are described with the contractors named and in many
instances the steamboats used on those routes identified. Included
in the book are 228 illustrations covering both covers carried on
many of routes and the original Post Office Department records relating to the
contracts. 243 maps in color contemporary to the periods of the
routes show the course of each route and the contracted post offices
served, as well as other landing places used. Published by the
Collectors Club of Chicago, this is the first book to contain
detailed information concerning this epoch making period of United
