The First Word
Chicagopex – November 17th – 19th
Our home town show is set to kick off on the Friday before Thanksgiving. It is our last show of the year. This is one of the top tier APS World Series stamp shows and always draws a large crowd from throughout the Midwest. The success of this show can be credited to Al Kugel and his very able staff (all members of the Chicago Philatelic Society). The hotel provides a special rate for collectors attending the show. The show attracts leading dealers from throughout the United States. If you want a wonderful philatelic experience I strongly recommend that you attend the show. Our booth is located just across from the entrance to the show and we hope to see you there.
Chicagopex is held at the Sheraton Chicago Northwest Hotel located at 3400 West Euclid Road (Route 53 & Euclid) in Arlington Heights, IL. It is just west of famed Arlington Race Track. The show rate is $109.00 per night and reservations can be made through Sheraton’s worldwide reservation system: 888/627-8093 (request: Chicago Philatelic Society Room Block). If you are flying in we suggest you use Alpha Transport Co. to connect from O’Hare International Airport to the hotel. The cost is about $21.00 which half what a taxi will charge (call 847/818-8600 to make a reservation).
Gordon Bradwell Collection of American Bank Note Issues Acquired
In September we purchased the outstanding large banknote issue collection of Gordon Bradwell. Gordon’s interest encompassed just those stamps printed by the American Bank Note Company (Scott numbers 182 – 218 and including postage dues and special delivery issues produced by American). The collection included essays, proofs, stamps (mint and used), and postal history. While much of the collection has been placed with collectors we have put aside many important pieces for inclusion in this edition of our newsletter.
William A. Martin Collection of the Three Cent 1869 Issue
At the Fall Mega-Event in New York City we purchased the three cent 1869 issue exhibit of the late William A. Martin. Some of the covers and cancels are offered in this edition of our newsletter. Bill was probably better known for his collection of Kansas Territorial postal history which was auctioned by Richard E. Drews several years ago. The territorial collection was the bases for a book by Bill titled, Somewhere in Time, and was published by La Posta Publications in 1987. We still have a few copies available, in stock, at $30.00 each, plus shipping. Unfortunately Bill passed away shortly after the release of the book. As an aside he had been Randy Neil’s roommate at KU.
Passed BY Army Censor Set to be Published
On page three you will find the pre-publication offer for Bill Helbock’s new book: Passed by Army Censor. This is the third book that we have published this year. The target date for publication is between the 15th and 30th of December. The edition is limited to just 500 copies and we expect a sellout. Censorship is a very popular topic in the postal history field and we are just now starting to see some serious publishing efforts emerge. This past month the Collectors Club of Chicago released: Intercepted in Bermuda – The Censorship of Transatlantic Mail during the Second World War. A review of this book will also be found on page three. It is in stock and ready to ship.
U.S. Patriotic Envelopes of WWII Receives Gold Medal
In May of this year we published Lawrence Sherman’s revised edition of U.S. Patriotic Envelopes of WWII. The new edition almost doubled the number of pages and content of the first edition which was released in 1999. The new edition also utilized four color printing throughout and has a beautiful four color dust jacket as well. In addition to over 1,000 new listing the pricing was completely update. We printed just over 1,000 copies and have around 300 left in stock.
Larry’s book was entered into the literature competition at StampShow in August and received a gold medal. Congratulations Larry!
